What is Outsider Art?

Outsider Art is the international description for art made by artists who are operating outside the ‘regular’ art scene. Artists with down-syndrome, autism, from psychiatrics or, more in general, autodidactic artists. The French synonym for outsider art is ‘art brût’ or, in other words, brute art. These artworks are mostly produced in the secluded area of an art studio or attic room. The characteristics of these people do request for this.

The English art critic, Roger Cardinal, gave it in his book (1972) the following description: ”works produced by persons unscathed by artistic culture, where mimicry plays little or no part (contrary to the activities of intellectuals). These artists derive everything…from their own depths, and not from the conventions of classical or fashionable art.”

Maison Savant has fell in love with outsider art in 2015, after visiting Gallery Atelier Herenplaats in the Netherlands. The stories of the artists, combined with the outspoken artworks were so interesting. Maison Savant want to achieve more attention for outsider art, through different projects. Outsider Art is de internationaal bekend staande naam voor kunst gemaakt door kunstenaars buiten het reguliere circuit. Mensen met down, autisme of uit de psychiatrie, of überhaupt gewoon autodidactische kunstenaars. Een synoniem ervoor is ‘art brût’ oftewel brute kunst. De werken van de kunstenaars worden meestal in de beslotenheid van een atelier of zolderkamer gemaakt. De situatie en persoonskenmerken van deze doelgroep vraagt hier ook om.

Outsider Art is de verzamelnaam voor kunst gemaakt door mensen die buiten het reguliere kunstcircuit vallen. Letterlijk dus ‘outsiders’. De Engelse kunsthistoricus Roger Cardinal gaf deze kunstvorm in 1972 de volgende definitie: ”kunst gemaakt door mensen die niet beïnvloed zijn door de huidige mores van de beeldende kunst, los van stromingen staan en het werk uitsluitend voor zichzelf maken.”

Maison Savant viel voor outsider art in 2015 na een bezoek aan Galerie Atelier Herenplaats in Rotterdam. Het sociale karakter van deze kunstvorm in combinatie met de uitgesproken kunstwerken, zorgden voor deze ‘klik’. Met Maison Savant willen we zorgen voor meer aandacht en interesse in Outsider Art.
